Overnight Sleep Studies (Part 1) What to Expect

Overnight sleep studies for sleep apnea called polysomnography (PSG) are conducted in our Sleep Center in Long Island. Patients are scheduled in advance and show up around 8 PM. They will meet our certified lab technician (usually it's Alex) who has over 20 years of experience. They will be brought to the room and set up fo the sleep study. This includes attaching monitoring equipment so that we can monitor your sleep, breathing, oxygen levels and movement throughout the night. You will leave around 6 - 7 AM. An appointment will usually be scheduled to follow up with Dr. Morgenstern (or your own physician) who will go over your results with you and let you know about the next steps.

Overnight Sleep Studies (Part 2) What to Expect

If you first sleep study showed that you have sleep apnea, then another sleep study that is a little bit different will be scheduled at our Long Island sleep center. This study will focus on the treatment of sleep apnea with continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP. Patients again are scheduled in advance and show up around 8 PM. They will again meet with a sleep technician, Alex who will set you up for what we call a "CPAP titration" study. This is another form of PSG where we find the right settings for CPAP. To learn more about Sleep Apnea, CPAP or other sleep disorders you can visit the American Sleep Apnea Society website, maintained by the director of the Long Island sleep center, Dr. Morgenstern.

Home sleep studies

Home sleep studies can offer some good data about sleep apnea. This works a little differently. You are scheduled to pick up the equipment. A different technologist (usually Anatoli) will show you how to connect the device. You go home with the device and bring it back to our Long Island Sleep Center the next morning. We analyze the results and schedule a follow up to go over the results.

Home sleep study results

If your home sleep study results are positive, an overnight sleep study (see part 2) at our Long Island Sleep Center should be scheduled. This will focus on the treatment portion for sleep apnea. If, however, the home sleep study is negative, then you might still need to undergo a diagnostic overnight sleep study (see part 1). This is one of the reasons why we prefer overnight sleep studies to home sleep studies.
